What is Radon, anyway?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the decay of uranium in our soil and rock. Because Middle Tennessee sits on a massive limestone shelf, we are a “Zone 1” area, meaning we have some of the highest potential for elevated radon levels in the country.

The problem? Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. When this gas gets trapped inside a home or building, it can build up to dangerous levels.

How We Test for It

Testing for radon is simple, non-invasive, and incredibly accurate. We use specialized continuous monitors (they look like a small box on a tripod) that we place in a nondescript area of the home, like a bedroom or living room.

• The Process: The device sits in the home for at least 48 hours.

• The Data: It tests the air once every hour to get a true average of the environment.

• The Result: We’re looking for a number. If your home tests at 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, the EPA recommends installing a mitigation system.

What if the Levels are High?

Don’t panic! Finding high radon levels doesn’t mean you have to walk away from your dream home. It just means the home needs a Radon Mitigation System, a specialized vent and fan system that pulls the gas from under the house and safely exhausts it above the roofline.
