Vapor

Barrier

Noun

A vapor barrier is a material layer, typically plastic sheeting or foil, used to block the movement of water vapor from the ground or surrounding soil into a home’s interior spaces. It plays a critical role in managing moisture levels in both basements and crawlspaces.

In basements, vapor barriers are often applied to the interior side of foundation walls or beneath flooring to reduce humidity, prevent condensation, and protect insulation and structural components from moisture damage.

In crawlspaces, a vapor barrier is typically laid directly over the ground and sealed to walls and seams to prevent moisture from evaporating into the crawlspace air. This helps control humidity, prevent mold and mildew growth, discourage pests, and protect the wood framing of the home above.
